Description
  • Scope and content: Full caption reads as follows: Haskell County, Kansas. This place...belong[s] to Mennonite farmers, of whom there are several in the county. They are generally thought to be good workers, and honest, but not friendly. Farmers call themselves "white people" to distinguish themselves from the Mennonites. The place shown here has an irrigation well -- one of the few places that has. Evidently these Mennonites are not of the ultra-plain variety. They have no feeling against mechanization. Notice the herd of milk cows..., and the barn that has been built for them. This Mennonite farms as much as possible in the way that he has always farmed back East, and apparently he has made good even here in the Dust Bowl.
