Summary[edit]

Description

Ancient region of Gandhara, 4th or 5th century Terracotta, 80cm height

This nearly 2,000-year-old head is one of the earliest Buddhist images. Bodhisattvas look like Buddhas but are adorned with jewellery and often have beards and moustaches.

Gandhara is the ancient name of a region in northern Pakistan that was a centre of East-West contact. It converted to Buddhism during the reign of the Indian Mauryan King Asoka (272-237BC) and had a succession of different rulers including the Greeks.
