Notes
  • Significance: The first unit of this building was erected in 1854 by St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum Association, who transferred it in 1860 to the Sisters of Notre Dame. It was encumbered by a debt of $40,000, which was paid by appropriations from time to time by the Mother House of the Order in Milwaukee, the State of Louisiana, the City of New Orleans, and many organizations and private individuals. As needs increased, other sections were erected, until the building extended along the block on Josephine St. as far as St. Mary's Assumption Church, under whose auspices the Sisters operated the Asylum.

Former convent and orphanage would be demolished in 1939; the St. Thomas Housing Projects built in part on the location. Closer to the camera are dilapidated wooden houses with paper condemnation orders visible. View is looking lakewards along Josephine Street; St. Mary's Assumption Church can be seen in the next block.

  • Survey number: HABS LA-1102
  • Building/structure dates: ca. 1854 Initial Construction
  • Building/structure dates: 1939 Demolished
