The officer in the photograph would appear to be Sergeant Alexander Stewart, who joined the Inverness-shire Constabulary on 7th March 1910 at the age of 20. A native of Ullapool in Ross-shire, he served at Boat of Garten, Banavie, Newtonmore and Lochmaddy as a Constable, before being promoted to Sergeant on 16th March 1924, to Leverburgh on the Island of Harris. He would have occupied the house adjacent to the Police Station there. Inverness County Council Vehicle Licensing Records www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_writtenword.jsp?item_id=5406 show that he registered this motor cycle ST4693 on 18th July 1927, and it is likely the photograph was taken soon afterwards. Sgt Stewart subsequently transferred to the Isle of Barra in 1934, then Beauly (near Inverness) in 1936, and then to Kingussie in 1937 from where he retired on pension (still in the rank of Sergeant) on 28th May 1948. He was then 58 years of age, and had completed 38 years police service.
