Summary[edit]

Description
English: Picture of John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church located at 594 Herron Avenue in the Upper Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 20, 2010. The church was founded in 1836, and is an historic African American church. The church building in the picture was originally the First Presbyterian Church of Minersville, built in 1894 by John Herron and family. The property was purchased in 1947 by the John Wesley Board of Trustees and made home to an African-American congregation with roots in the pre-Civil War era. The church is on the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations. In 1994, the congregation was forced to temporarily abandon the church property following flooding that was created by waters from an abandoned 100-acre mine that ran below the church. In 2006, the church again faced flooding from the mine water, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) installed new piping to divert the mine water from the church. At the DEP's suggestion, a geothermal system was installed in November 2008 that used the runoff from the mine water to provide heating and cooling for the church building.
