Description
English: Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone of Private 26503 John Gibson, Machine Gun Corps, who died 14 May 1916, aged 21. He was the son of William and Ellen of 2, Alexandra Road, Windermere, Cumbria. His body is buried in Bowness Cemetery, Bowness on Windermere, Cumbria.
Some notes from what remains of his Army record. He enlisted on 3 December 1915 at Royal Leamington Spa as Private 4543, 30th Royal Fusiliers aged 21 years and 2 months. he lived with his parents at 2, Alexandra Road and gave his occupation as an electrician. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps as Private 26503 on 1 March 1916. He embarked Folkestone on the 19th April 1916 disembarking at Boulogne the same day. On 28 April 1916 he was admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital suffering from tonsillitis. On the 6 May 1916 he was sent to England on SS Aberdonia and was admitted into 1st London General Hospital (Section) St Bartholomew West Smithfield London. he died in this hospital on 15 May 1916. He had a brother, Sergeant Bruce Gibson 79379361 Royal Defence Corps, formerly Sergeant 11/13455 Border Regiment, who was at the time of his brother's death, stationed at the Prisoner of War Camp, Rowrah, Cockermouth, Cumberland. He also had served in France from 24 November 1915 and survived the war.
