Description
English: Two Views of a Lady Wearing an English Hood, costume study. Pen and ink and brush, black, grey, and pink washes, 15.9 × 11 cm, British Museum.

Scholars are not certain whether Holbein drew this study during his first visit to England or during his second. Similarities have been noted between the costume worn here and in Holbein's portrait of Lady Guildford, 1527. Although women continued to wear this type of gable or English hood into the later 1530s, most of Holbein's portraits in his second English period, from 1532, show the sides and tails of the hoods turned up, as was the fashion, or the French hood popularised by Anne Boleyn.
