Relief de pilier du mandapa du temple de Virupaksha à Pattadakal Sur le registre du haut, Shiva et Parvati sont entourés de leurs deux fils (Ganesh et Murugan) et de dévôts. Le temple de Virupaksha a été construit autour de 740 par la reine Lokamahadevi pour commémorer la victoire de son mari, le roi chalukya Vikramaditya II sur les Pallava (autre royaume hindou situé plus à l'est, voir l'album sur Mahabalipuram). C'est le plus beau temple de Pattadakal pour la qualité de son architecture de type dravidien et pour celle de ses reliefs et sculptures. La structure du temple de Virupaksha est composée d'un mandapa (salle à piliers sculptés) doté de trois porches et d'un sanctuaire, surmonté d'une tour à trois étages et entouré d'un déambulatoire. Un pavillon consacré au véhicule de Shiva : le taureau Nandi fait face à l'entrée du temple.
