Description
Nederlands: Beeld van de Heilige Cunera boven de ingang van het appartementencomplex Hogewoerd 53-57. Dit beeld is afkomstig uit het Cunera Klooster, tussen de St. Jorissteeg en de Hogewoerd. Het klooster werd samen met de Barbaraschool en de Camera-bioscoop in 1983 afgebroken. Het beeld werd in 1988 teruggeplaatst boven de ingang van de nieuw gebouwde appartementen. In haar handen houdt Cunera blokjes hout. In de Leidsche Courant van 14 december 1940 (pag.2), schrijft Venator Vagans over de kapel van de Barbaraschool: "In de erg-strenge voorgevel staat een ander beeld van Cunera. hoogverheven, zóó hoog verheven, dat het nauwelijks nog mogelijk is te onderscheiden, hoe zij houtspaanders uitstrooit op de hoeden van de voorbijgangers. Een tweede legende uit het leven van deze legendarische heilige, de brooden der naastenliefde, die bij Elisabeth tot rozen opbloeiden, verhardden bij Cunera tot blokjes hout."
English: Leiden, Hogewoerd 53-57. Statue of Saint Cunera. Formerly belonging to the Cunera Convent, St. Jorissteeeg / Hogewoerd Leiden. This convent was demolished in 1983. The statue was saved and placed above the entrance of the newly built appartments at Hogewoerd 53-57.
