Summary[edit]

Description
English: Magnolia Tree and Persian Ironwood tree, former South Devon College site The bare branches of the magnolia tree on the site of the former South Devon College will soon be covered in flowers. An old stable building can be seen in the background and another tree in the former Arboretum, reputed to be a Persian Ironwood, is nearby. These trees were originally protected from bulldozers by John Miles, an Art teacher at the College in the 1970s and their trunks were covered in six feet of earth. John Miles is an established artist, and one of his Triptychs can be seen in the National Westminster Bank in Torquay. He died in the 1990s. These trees have survived the building of the main tower block at the College, the Art Block and the Learning Resources Centre all now demolished and the site is being developed for housing, the College having moved to Paignton. This shows that the efforts of a single (minded) individual can make a difference, as these trees are now protected.
