Summary[edit]
DescriptionMaiden's Garland - geograph.org.uk - 829852.jpg |
English: Maiden's Garland in SS Lawrence and George's parish church, Springthorpe, Lincolnshire. A maiden's garland in honour of Mary Hill, killed on Shrove Tuesday 1814 while ringing one of the church bells. Her arm became entangled by the rope and she was carried to the roof whence she fell to the floor and hit her head against the stone and was killed.
At her funeral, three maidens dressed in white preceded the coffin carrying three white crowns, afterwards hung in the church, only one of which now remains. Maiden's garlands were carried at the funeral of an unmarried girl as a symbol of her chastity and hung in the church as memorials. Because they were made of paper, it is very rare for them to survive. |
