DescriptionMajor's hill fountain.JPG |
English: The python and elephant fountain as it stood in Major's Hill Park in 1919 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The fountain, an urn supported by four elephants and decorated with serpents, was presented by Donald Smith, the 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, to the city in 1909. It was purchased in Osaka Japan by Sir Henry Bate, then chairman of the Ottawa Improvement Commission, on behalf of the donor. It was removed from the park in the 1950s for repair, and was eventually relocated to the Aylmer marina. Original caption: " The python and elephant fountain in Major Hill Park, Ottawa. It is a handsome piece of work and reminds one of what you would expect to see in the Oriental counties. " |
