| Description |
Deutsch: Marbacher Quadrant English: Marbach Quadrant. The original was constructed in 1755 by John Bird of London for the Göttingen Observatory of Tobias Mayer. He used it from February 1756 to August 1761 to measure accurate positions of stars. Based on observations from 1756 and 1757 he published a catalogue of 998 star positions in April 1759. This was the most accurate star catalogue of its time. It contributed to the discovery of the proper motion of stars. One of the 'stars' observed later turned out to be the planet Uranus. The telecope of the original quadrant had a lens diameter of 6 centimeters, giving it a limiting magnitude of 7.8. The original quadrant still exists at the Institute of Astrophysics of the University of Göttingen. The quadrant radius is 2000 mm, its weight 900 kg. The telescope of the replica has a diameter of 80 mm, a focal length of 2100 mm and a magnification of 31. The replica was built in 2012 by Dieter Baader. |
