Notes
  • Significance: This wood framed house, built circa 1835, is the oldest structure on the Carl Sandburg Estate. Built by C. G. Memminger, a wealthy Charleston businessman and later Secretary of the Confederacy, it served as a summer retreat and later as an interim residence while his large mansion was under construction. The structure was originally built as a two room house, but was enlarged between Memminger's ownership and the acquisition in 1945 by the writer-poet Carl Sandburg. Being an avid goat breeder, Mrs. Sandburg used the house as a place to keep her championship bucks. Due to historical significance, the entire estate including the Memminger House, is now under the direction of the National Park Service and open to the public.
  • Survey number: HABS NC-305
  • Building/structure dates: ca. 1835 Initial Construction
