Summary[edit]

Description
English: Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras, from the British Library. The fairytale spires of the former Midland Grand Hotel peep over the roof-top and onto the piazza of the British Library.

Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878), this Grade 1-listed former hotel is a most impressive example, if not the pinnacle of Victorian Gothic architecture. Constructed in stages, the completed building used some 60 million bricks, 9,000 tons of ironwork, and included polished columns of fourteen different British granites and limestones.

The Midland Grand first opened its doors to customers in 1873, being finally completed in 1876. Initially its 300-rooms acquired an excellent reputation for luxury, but it became too expensive to operate and refurbish, and following closure in 1935 it became railway offices until abandoned completely in the 1980s. But the new Eurostar Terminal at St. Pancras gave the old building a new lease on life and it is being converted back into a luxury hotel.
