Credit / Mention de source : Library and Archives Canada, C-123844 / Bibliothèque et Archives Canada, C-123844 Description / Descriptions : A typewritten inscription attached to this large porcelain miniature identifies the sitter as Miss Jessie White, a daughter of the journalist and politician, the Honourable Thomas White (1830-1888). Elected to the House of Commons under the Conservatives in 1878, he was appointed the Minister of the Interior in 1885 and was a valued member of the Macdonald government. He died in 1888 from penumonia and is remembered for his conscientious work in western Canada during the aftermath of the Northwest Rebellion. Dressed in her finery, the young woman wears a long dress with grey underskirt and coral overskirt with white front insert, with white ruffs at the wrists and neck. A flower in her hair, gloves, a bracelet on the left wrist and a fabric choker round her neck complete her outfit. She is posed in three-quarter length with her right arm raised above her head as if ready to take the next dance step. This miniature was painted by Hugo Meisel (1887-ca. 1920), an Austrian artist known to have worked on porcelain. |
