| Description |
English: Nevada Test Site, Area 5. Gravel Gertie Site, on 5-01 Road. A "Gravel Gertie" is a structure that was designed for work involving mating/unmating of high explosives with nuclear material. The walls can withstand an accidental conventional explosion. In the event of a detonation, the gravel covering would be lifted and then fall back, filtering most of the nuclear material from the escaping gases in the process, thus preventing the escape of radioactive particles into the atmosphere.
