Summary[edit]

Description Set-up for subsequent code infraction: When firestops are done by separate trades, instead of a speciality firestop subcontractor who does all firestopping on site, mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural, a popular cost-cutting measure is for mechanical and electrical trades to absolve themselves of sealing wall openings, particularly in drywall, by claiming that they have hung their pipes and wires BEFORE the drywall was up and that, therefore, the drywaller is responsible. The drywaller has no such instructions in his specification and simply butts up to the penetrants and uses common drywall mud to close the gap, which is not an approved firestop. With plastic piping, which melts and burns quickly in a fire, this is particularly dangerous. When the subtrades don't allow enough money for this pre-tender, on the basis of such "reasoning", a budgetary battle or code infractions, or both are not uncommon outcomes.
