Summary[edit]

Description Opera racing off Meols. Hoylake Sailing Club has raced Opera class boats here since 1902 in what was known as the Hoyle Lake (or "The Lake"), for it once provided anchorage, sheltered from the open sea by the East Hoyle Bank, where ships and fishing boats could remain afloat at low water. The Lake has since lost its depth and now floods only for about two hours either side of high water, but Operas are still able to race inshore on the higher tides.
