English: Orphir - round church. The remains of the round church at Orphir, of early medieval date. The church is next to the "Earl's Bu" (booth, or drinking hall), and features in one of the more famous episodes from Orkneyinga Saga. Here, one Christmas in the 1120s, Svein Asleifarson ambushed and slew Svein 'Breast-Rope' as he returned to the Hall from the church. |
