Summary[edit]
DescriptionOxbow lake starting to form on River Wye - geograph.org.uk - 305019.jpg |
English: Oxbow lake starting to form on River Wye In January 2005 I was told about a large loop of the River Wye that had just been cut off, thereby starting the formation of what every geography student seems to remember above all else - an oxbow lake (so named because of its resemblance to a yoke for harnessing oxen).
The river is flowing from right to left and has blocked off the upstream end of its former course with deposits visible to the right of the centre of the image. The new course crosses the centre of the image and the downstream end of the former course remains connected to the channel. The floodplain of the Wye is clearly visible beyond the A438 road in the foreground. The distinct summit in the background is Twmpa (or Lord Hereford's Knob) and the col to its left is the Gospel Pass. The latter is the location for the title sequences and opening scene of the cult horror film 'An American werewolf in London'. |
