Summary[edit]

Description
English: Paratroopers land following the 70th anniversary re-enactment of the iconic World War airborne operation at Arnhem. The parachute drop was marked with an airborne jump onto the original British landing zone 'Y' at Ede.

Soldiers from 16 Air Assault Brigade joined veterans, Dutch civilians and airborne troops from across the world to mark the 70th anniversary of a Second World War operation that defined the character of the British Army's airborne forces.

Operation Market Garden in September 1944 saw British and American airborne troops land behind German lines with the aim of capturing a string of river crossings to allow tanks to thrust across the River Rhine in to Germany. However, strong resistance prevented armoured forces linking up with the 1st Airborne Division at the final bridge at Arnhem. Expecting to be relieved within 48 hours of landing, the lightly armed paratroopers held out through nine days of brutal street fighting before withdrawing across the river. Over 1,500 British soldiers were killed at Arnhem and nearly 6,500 captured, while five Victoria Crosses were awarded.

While the campaign - immortalised in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far - failed to achieve its ambitious strategic objectives, it has become a byword for the determination and fighting spirit of airborne forces.

Commemorative events held at Arnhem this weekend (19-21 September) included memorial services on the bridge at Arnhem and Oosterbeek Cemetery and a multi-national parachute drop on to Ginkel Heath, the same fields used as a drop zone in 1944.
