Ранее портрет бесспорно считался работой Ф.С. Рокотова. Так он, например, значился еще в 1980 году в каталоге Русского музея (Государственный Русский музей. Живопись. XVIII—XX века. Каталог. — Л., 1980). Однако черты живописной манеры мастера проследить на этом полотне крайне трудно. Из-за плохой сохранности красочный слой был переведен с авторского холста на новый, что привело к многочисленным тонировкам и записям. Сейчас авторство Ф.С. Рокотова ставится под сомнение (Государственный Русский музей. Живопись. XVIII век. Каталог. Т. 1. — СПб., 1998. С. 151.).

Дата создания произведения также вызывает вопросы. Портрет относят к 1762 году по двум причинам. Во-первых, мундир лейб-гвардии Преображенского полка, в котором изображен император, был им введен в начале 1762 года. После переворота и прихода к власти Екатерины II этот мундир прусского покроя был отменен. Во-вторых, известно, что в апреле 1762 года Петр III дал художнику сеанс (Петров П.Н. Заметки и историко-художественные исследования. Ч. II. — СПб., 1862.).

Подобный парадный портрет в рост не характерен для Ф.С. Рокотова. Мастер предпочитал так называемый полупарадный тип — с поколенным или поясным срезом на фоне архитектурного элемента или природы.

Данный портрет композиционно очень во многом схож с портретом работы А.П. Антропова (Около 1762. ГРМ).
