Notes
  • Significance: The town of Navasota, Texas, was founded in 1856 in Grimes County, after being settled several times under various names. In the 1860's, both the Civil War and a yellow fever epidemic had severe effects upon the town. During the period from 1860 to 1890 the railroads came to Navasota, and population increased. The first cottonseed oil mill in Texas was established sometime before 1880. The cotton, food processing, and dairy industries continued to grow, and Navasota remains a commercial center for the surrounding area. Included among the buildings in the 100 block of Railroad Street are the Giesel House (1860), the oldest commercial building in the town, and the P.A. Smith Hotel (1876), the upper portion of which was converted in 1890 to a private residence with commercial space below.
