My mother is going to kill me for posting this. She told me not to drive this road. (Mom, this was done under the supervision of our security people, who know best) The road between Kabul and Jalalabad is beautiful. It's a long jagged pass with switchbacks, huge cliffs and tunnels. Can you see how the Soviets lost 15,000 troops trying to invade this country? This road used to be dirt... imagine trying to get a battalion through this thing... These hills weren't perfect cover... a million Afghans died in the fighting. Driving the Soviets out came at a huge price. Driving this road really brought home some of the best advice you can get... never get involved in a land war in Asia.
