Summary[edit]
DescriptionRoches Moutonnees, Mellon Udrigle - geograph.org.uk - 920283.jpg |
English: Roches Moutonnees, Mellon Udrigle. Roches Moutonnees - the name given to rocks which have been reshaped by glacial action. The glacier must have moved left to right, smoothing one side of the rocks and plucking at the other. My old geography teacher of many decades ago explained the meaning as 'sheep lying down', but the information given at a visitor site at Dulnain Bridge [NJ0024] suggests that the name was first used by a Frenchman, H B de Sausure in 1787, who likened the rocks to the wavy wigs or moutonnees worn by fashionable gentlemen of the time, the wigs being slicked down with mutton tallow. Surely 'Brylcreem' would have been better? |
