Labor Day Weekend 2005 is my first in-depth return to the San Francisco Bay Area since I had been forced to leave in the wake of the dot-com bust. When I made the Bay Area my home, the Civic Center Plaza was the site of one of my favorite Sapphic memories: a free Melissa Etheridge concert in August 1999. I am back to reminisce that memory. A key element of my return, now that I had a bit of a career and spending power, was to arrive in a leased BMW 3-series, seen in the foreground. I would go on and purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease. It is much better than driving around in a previously wrecked Ford Contour which had been the case when I lived in the area, not to mention being a payback for much of the BS that had taken place when I worked odd jobs in the Financial District. Sadly, BMW is well involved with the Vatican and its homophobic initiatives, as well as stateside incendiary commentators - and not too long afterwards, I stopped bringing the BMW to San Francisco. Eventually I sold it to get a Hyundai, and given my penchant for German cars' performance and hatred of Korean immigrant theocracy, it was a very counterintuitive trade, but one that worked out very well. And if I ever need to drive a needless pricey and vain German luxury car again, there will always be Mercedes-Benz. I would go on to arrange the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz for my folks in 2009, and take delivery in Germany. |
