Notes |
This scene was painted several times, from various viewpoints, by both Frank E Jamieson (b1834 - d1899) and Francis E Jamieson (b1895 - d1950). Both artists painted in similar styles, and both signed their paintings F E Jamieson, in similar script. This particular painting is by Frank E Jamieson. The scene resembles the hills at the north-east tip of Loch Awe, viewed from Kilchurn Castle island, although other, very similar scenes painted by the Jamiesons bear the inscriptions 'Loch Fyne' and 'Lochearnhead'. In the 20th century, during the inter-war years (1919-1939) Francis E Jamieson became one of the most prolific and fashionable artists of his time. He entered into exclusive contracts with various furniture stores, but sold additional paintings ‘on the side’ by using a range of pseudonyms (at least eleven are known, including J McGregor, Graham Williams, Henry Stewart, HB Davis, W Richards, Aubrey Ramus, Stanley Penn, A de Perrin and Phil-Hipps), with each imaginary artist having his own style and geographical coverage (e.g. the signature "Aubrey Ramus" appears on Highland scenes, as well as on paintings in a very different style of thatched cottages, hunting and farming scenes of rural England; "Graham Williams' appears on Highland scenes as well as a range of seascapes etc). Perhaps because of his extraordinary, almost industrial level of output, Francis Jamieson’s paintings do sometimes appear rushed, with a ‘chocolate box’ superficiality and almost formulaic similarity. In recent years, both Frank and Francis Jamieson have sunk into obscurity. Although their paintings are better appreciated in the USA than in the UK, they can still be acquired at auction for remarkably modest sums. |
