Dit beeldje werd April 2004 door drie stichtingen, 'Berghs Belang', 'Het Gasthuis' en 'Stadskern', geschonken aan de bevolking van 's-Heerenberg ter gelegenheid van de 625 jaar oude stadsrechten van 's-Heerenberg.
Het beeldje herinnert aan Mechteld ten Ham, een 's-Heerenbergs vrouwtje, dat in het huisje achter het beeldje heeft gewoond en destijds van hekserij werd beschuldigd; na een heksenproef in De Laak in Azewijn, waarbij ze niet verdronk en 'dus een heks was', had ze de twijfelachtige eer om op 25 juli 1605 als laatste heks in Nederland te worden verbrand.
Hoewel Mechteld ten Ham waarschijnlijk geen echte heks in geweest, werd toch voor de geromantiseerde heksfiguur gekozen als mascotte van het jubileumfeest 's-Heerenberg 625 jaar stad en het jaarlijks terugkerende Mechteld ten Ham Weekeinde.
Het door Patrick Beverloo vervaardigde beeldje werd op 1e paasdag 2004 onthuld.This sculpture was donated to the people of' s-Heerenberg, in April 2004 by three foundations, "Berghs Belang', 'Het Gasthuis' and 'Stadskern', for the occasion of the 625 year old city rights of 's-Heerenberg.
The statue recalls Mechteld ten Ham, that lived in the cottage behind the statue, a woman accused of witchcraft after a trial in De Laak in Azewijn. She did not drown and "therefore was a witch", she had the dubious honor to be burned as the last witch in the Netherlands on July 25, 1605.
Although Mechteld ten Ham was probably not a real witch, the romanticized witch figure was nevertheless chosen as the mascot of the 's-Heerenberg 625 years city jubilee and the annual Mechteld ten Ham weekend.
The statue crafted by Patrick Beverloo was unveiled on the first day of Easter 2004.Licensing[edit]
