Description
English: Each lion holds a wild boar in its forepaws, of which only the head is visible. The mane, divided into thick tufts, hides much of the scale-covered back. The scale motif also covers the lower half of the body consisting of a long, coiled snake’s tail. The two parts are separated by a band with ovolo and beaded moldings, from which large, jagged acanthus leaves spread. These creatures were a recurring subject in Persian textile decoration that came to Italy via the trade. The sculptures come from Palazzo Del Balzo in Naples. Salvatore Romano had two jute-covered wooden aedicules made to exhibit the sculptures, where they are still shown today. The lion is resting on a marble capital, in a worse state of conservation. It has two rows of jagged acanthus leaves and, above, symmetrical pairs of helixes at the sides of the large flowers of the abacus.
