Full caption reads as follows: Shelby County, Iowa. "The church is the most important institution in Irwin today. Were it not for the church, the community would not be a desirable place in which to live." This is the traditional way of thinking about the church, and the statement was made by a non-church-goer. These pictures were taken in the Norwegian Lutheran Church, south of the village of Irwin. Its pastor is a farmer on the side and a man respected by everyone. His church is generally well-filled. An interesting thing about this church is that once every month a Norwegian service is held for the benefit of the older people who like to hear their native language upon occasion. (English)
