Summary[edit]

Description
English: Soapy Joe's was here. This car park on Whitehall Road in Leeds is the site of the former soap works built by Joseph Watson in the 1860's. Watson sold out to Lever Brothers (later Unilever) in the 1920's, and in the 1940's it was converted to make toothpaste and shampoo. A second factory was opened on Coal Road in Seacroft SE358372 in the 1960's and this site was closed in the late 1980's. I worked here in the late 1970's.
