Summary[edit]

Description

Massive traffic jams on the I-15 during my return from Las Vegas to Los Angeles led me to take a detour in the Victorville area; this put me right in the area of Southern California Logistics Airport, formerly George Air Force Base.

The Southern California Logistics Airport (airport code is VCV under IATA, and KVCV under ICAO) is one of several that are used as a "boneyard" for old aircraft that are being stored or dismantled.

An overview of the boneyard. In the distance are Boeing 747-400s and other relatively newer aircraft that are stored for possible future service; most of them still have the full markings of their operators. In front are older aircraft with their operator markings covered, that most likely will never fly again.

The frontmost aircraft is "City of Chicago," the first Boeing 767 to enter revenue service, with United Airlines on 8 September 1982. There is another United 767 in the foreground, with its paint mostly stripped off.
