Original caption: Home Tour "A" No. 1. the exact date of building unknown, but United States government researches place its construction at 1721. It was used as the duana or custom house by Spanish authorities. It contains a small prison in which were guarded the contrabandistas. Interview between General Andrew Jackson and the pirate, Jean Lafitte, concerning the defense of New Orleans against the British on January 8, 1815, was supposed to have been held here. Among the furnishings of this house are valuable portraits and a unique Italian brazier of carved brass which is a duplicate of the one owned by the Pope of Rome. It was executed by Benvenuto Cellini. A portrait by Thomas Sully is another outstanding feature in this home, which is owned by Mrs. Helen Pitkin Schertz |
