| Description |
English: St Margaret's church - corbel in porch. St Margaret's church > 1335260 - owned by the monks of Preaux until 1414 and presently in the stewardship of Kings College, Cambridge - was built mainly between 1180 and 1220. The church has a rare octagonal tower > 1335268 which dates from the 12th/13th century and encases an earlier round tower. The castellated top was added in the 15th century. Four early corbel heads (one depicted here), now much cracked and distorted, can be seen on the ceiling of the south porch. The church was restored in the 19th century > 1335270 - 1335274 but has retained its C15 font > 1335279 with four sitting lions on the stem and the signs of the four evangelists carved on the bowl. There are two sets of royal arms - one to George II (dated 1745) > 1335281 and another to Charles II which is dated 1661 > 1335283. The east window (designed by W.F. Haslop) is modern and was installed in 1952 > 1335272. |
