| Description |
English: St Matthias Old Church The church was built in 16524 as a chapel for the hamlet of Poplar and Blackwall and is the only church from the Interregnum still standing in London. It was upgraded to the status of parish church in the mid C19, restored later in the century, and although it escaped damage in WW2, it closed in 1976 due to declining attendance. It subsequently became a community centre.
In this view across Poplar Park the church retains a semi-rural appearance. |
