English: Russia stampless folded letter to France, 'St. PETERSBURG DEN 9 OCT. 1848.' boxed cancel, manuscript 'franco'. Black 'P.D.', straight line 'AUS RUSSLAND FRANCO', French 'PRUSSE VALENCIENNES 30 OCT 48' c.d.s. Bordeaux (1 NOV 48) arrival.

Provenance: Arthur White.

Details:

  • October 9, 1848 (Julian) paid letter posted at St. Petersburg. Sender wrote 'franco'. Not restated at post office. The postmark 'St. PETERSBURG DEN 9 OCT. 1848' was applied.
Dobin: 1.02 type 3.06. Reception expedition of foreign correspondence, used 1844-1853, Rarity 4.[1]
  • October 27 (Gregorian) 'BERLIN 27 10', typical Berlin transit postmark and 'AUS RUSSLAND FRANCO' applied. Based on the usual presence of these Berlin postmarks this 'AUS RUSSLAND FRANCO' marking is regarded as a Berlin mark.

  • October 30, red 'PRUSSE VALENCIENNES 30 OCT 48 3'. French entry mark at Valenciennes. 3's show the postmark was struck at Paris. Letter was also marked by the French with 'P.D.' (Payee au Destination).
Noël: #1021[2]
  • No readable transit postmark, but likely transit in Paris on October 30.
  • November 1, 'BORDEAUX 1 NOV (32)' arrival backstamp.
