| Description |
English: Sterns on the Severn Valley Railway. Seen from the footplate of 7812 Erlestoke Manor. The River Severn comes very close to the railway at this point, and geology is also rather awkward. The result is the ground was continuously slowly but steadily creeping into the river. This meant the permanent way gang had to keep a close watch to maintain the track alignment, hence the 5 mph speed limit and the noticeable bend in the line. Extensive drainage and earthworks have since reduced the problem but it still has to be carefully monitored. |
