Summary[edit]

Description
English: Tasburgh's ancient earthworks enclosure - medieval hedge. This hedge is growing on the bank of earth which once enclosed ancient Tasburgh > 1355634. By the year 800 Tasburgh was an enclosure on the flat summit of a spur of land bounded on three sides by the River Tas and the Hempnall Stream and covered an area of approximately 6 hectares > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1355600. It was surrounded by a large earth bank and a deep ditch which has since been filled in > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1355622. St Mary's church > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1355491 is situated just within this enclosure. The surrounding hedge in the east is one of the oldest in the parish and from the number and type of species growing in it, it is believed to be medieval or earlier. Evidence of a prehistoric settlement estimated to date from 9000-2000 BCE was found during archaeological excavations carried out in 1975 and 1980. Saxon settlement in the area began about 700 CE and by 1200 the site was no longer occupied.
