English: Temple Wood southern stone circle One of a pair of circles on this site. The nearby information boards give the following sequence of events in the history of the southern circle:

Sometime before 3000 BC the stone circle was constructed. About 2000 BC flat topped cairns containing stone cists started to be placed outside the circle. The SW cist contained a child's body. In the NE cairn an adult's body was found, together with a beaker and flints. About 1700BC slabs were placed in the gaps between the standing stones . An outer bank was added, with stones being carefully laid behind the interval slabs to take the weight. Between 1400BC and 1200BC - a central cairn was built and another drum shaped cairn was placed between it and the outer circle and not long after were covered by stones and another cremation added. Over the years, peat spread over the cairns, through which the standing stones stood proud. In the Middle ages or later stones on the E side were removed. One, which was being fashioned into a mill stone, broke and was left in situ. 19th century agricultural improvements saw field stones placed inside the circle, forming the upper part of the bank. This is the stage at which it has been reconstructed.

In late 19th century the area round circle was planted with oak trees and named Half Moon or Temple Wood.
