[edit] Summary
Text formatting: the left column was set with pdfeLateX, the right one with Microsoft Word. Font: Garamond Created by baba66, http://de.wikipedia.org, 2006-03-30 License: cc-by-sa/2.0/de and GFDL
On the left side the following ligatures are used: fi, fl ft, ch (german) normal and italic, ff and ffi.
Note the use of real small caps on the left, while Word uses scaled capital letters.
The spacing of TeX is signnificantly better: I had to delete a few words from the original blind text to prevent Word to use two additional lines of text.
pdfTeX allows the use of "character protrusion", used on the left to achieve a optically straight right border: the hyphens protrude into the margin.
A nice feature specific to eTeX is shown in the last line: The space between "Commodo" and "Consequat" is a little bigger on the left than on the right, because eTeX is able to adjust this by an arbitrary value to the preceeding line.
