Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Night Stair, Hexham Abbey 'Thirty five worn stone steps rise from the south transept, leading to a broad gallery behind a stone parapet, with three doorways opening from it. People have used this night stair for eight centuries: it was probably built in the early 13th century. Up to 1537 its main use was by the canons, whose dormitory was beyond the end of the upper level of the south transept; after the priory was dissolved, the dormitory fell into decay and was pulled down. In most other English monasteries, the Night Stair was also removed, but it survived in Hexham because of an unusual earlier change to the building layout which resulted in there being other rooms at the head of the stairs.'
