English: The Obelisk, above Mamhead Built in 1742, intended to be visible to seafarers approaching the mouth of the Exe. Now it is hardly visible because of the encroaching trees. According to several websites, it is 100 feet high ... but that seems an exaggeration. And what stone is it? Sandstone, according to the "Buildings of England". Granite, according to other sources. |
