Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Worcester Bar, by Gas Street, Birmingham No, not a picture of a local drinking hole, (though there are plenty of those about in this rejuvenated area!) but part of Midlands canal history. The stretch of canal beyond the stop lock (foreground)leads to the junction of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal and the older Birmingham Canal, beyond the arch of Broad Street Tunnel. In fact, the W & B formerly terminated at Gas Street Basin because when it opened it was prevented from connecting with the Birmingham Canal, so goods had to be carried from boat to boat across a solid barrier, known as the Worcester Bar, which separated the canals. An Act of Parliament in 1815 resulted in this stop lock being constructed, linking the two canals. Gas Street Basin is off camera to the right.
