Summary[edit]

Description This memorial (or Gedenkstein here) had was taken on 6 June 2003 been unveiled by Guenter Grass on the joint birthdays of Mann and Pushkin. (Pushkin's birthday in the old calendar of the 18th century was 11 days earlier viz. 26 May. Mann had written his novel Mario and the Magician (Mario und der Zauberer) here during August 1929. This stay inspired him to buy the house in Nida the following year. He stayed in this Kurhaus. Lines by Johannes R Becher of the GDR and writer of its anthem: "Du hast bewahrt der Sprache Heiligtum, Sie liebend so wie der nur lieben kann, der sie durchlitten hat, die heimatlosen Zeiten.
