Description
English: In the high lands of Nidderdale, Yorkshire, the distant sprawling city of Leeds siphons off large quantities of the rainwater that supplies rivers like the Washburn. The place is a wonderful expanse of moorland and hills; an area of outstanding natural beauty. This is Thruscross Reservoir in the Upper Washburn Valley, one of the most striking lakeland settings of all. Beneath these waters lies the submerged village of West End; a settlement that was sacrificed in the sixties so that the valley could be flooded to supply water to Leeds. The reservoir is a strange and fascinating place to walk around; especially when water levels are low. In the above photograph to the right hand side of the shot you can see a derelict old flax mill which was once a part of West End. The photograph can be found in this set of Thruscross images.
