Summary[edit]

USSR 5-ruble coin, released in the USSR on October 12, 1988 to commemorate The Bronze Horseman, a monument to Peter the Great in Leningrad.

The front of the coin depicts in relief the USSR coat of arms and the words "СССР" ("USSR"), "5 РУБЛЕЙ" ("5 Rubles") and a number "1988".

The reverse side depicts in relief

  • the The Bronze Horseman monument to Peter the Great on Decembrists Square in Leningrad with Peter and Paul Fortress on background
  • words "ПАМЯТНИК ПЕТРУ ПЕРВОМУ" ("Monument to Peter the Great")
  • year of erection of the monument: "1782"
  • name of the city where the monument was erected: "ЛЕНИНГРАД" ("Leningrad")

On the edge the words "ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ" ("Five Rubles") are engraved twice, separated by stars.

Metal: white copper-nickel alloy.

Weight: 19.8 g.

Diameter: 35 mm.

Width: 2.6 mm.

Painter and sculptor: A.V.Baklanov.


Mintage: 2 million pieces (Leningrad Mint), including 325,000 proof.
