English: Steve Phifer, a civilian mariner assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC), stationed aboard USS Coronado (AGF 11), signals to a SH-3G "Sea King" helicopter to hold while chalks are placed around its wheels. The San Diego, Calif. native is part of an experimental manning concept aboard the former Third Fleet command ship. The ship reduced its manning from 481 Sailors to a combined civilian/Navy crew of 263. Coronado is currently acting as the temporary command ship for U.S. Seventh Fleet while USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) is in dry-dock for repairs. |
