English: Krashennikov’s image is peculiar to the majority of Tropinin’s portraits – the sitter is open and benevolent. Tropinin himself offered an explanation: ‘Who ever enjoys looking at dull and scowling faces? Why should something unpleasant remain forever on the canvas, why should it subdue those who love the person and why should they be reminded of unpleasant moments long past? Let him be seen and remembered just like in the happy periods of life’.

Тропинин объяснял это сам: «Кто же любит в жизни смотреть на сердитые, пасмурные лица?
