| Description |
English: Village sign, Catfield. "This sign was unveiled by John Francis from Anglia Television on 14 September 1998". As well as 197397, a tractor and a trading wherry (see TG2508), the sign depicts a cat and, at the top, the local rare species, a swallowtail butterfly. The wherry is significant because the village has two staithes, one on the Ant in TG3620 and one on the Thurne TG3921 - just over 2 miles as the crow flies, not much more by road, but a tortuous 14 miles or more by river. Apparently the village used to be known as "Clever Catfield" for this reason. |
